Plant and Seed Swap
The Story of Cullinan’s Plant and Seed Swap
In the picturesque town of Cullinan, known for its heritage charm and warm-hearted community, something special has been taking root—quietly, organically, and with an unmistakable sense of purpose. It’s called the Plant and Seed Swap, and it’s blossoming into far more than just a garden event
From One Idea, A Community Grows
The initiative was first planted—quite literally—by Charles, a local Cullinan resident with a simple yet powerful idea: What if people could share their extra plants and seeds instead of throwing them away or buying more? What if, through this sharing, a community could grow—not just in gardens, but in spirit?
“It started small,” says Charles. “Just me and a few others with extra seedlings and seeds. We met up, swapped, and talked about what we were growing. It was clear—people were eager for more than just plants. They wanted connection.”
A Team Takes Root
As word spread and interest grew, Charles realized the group needed more hands to keep things running smoothly. That’s when Thinus, Jennifer, and Joanne-Mari joined as administrators—each bringing their own passion and dedication to the mission.
Together, this team nurtured the Plant and Seed Swap into something sustainable and inviting. With each event, they saw not only more swappers but also more conversations, more laughter, and more sharing—of knowledge, advice, and stories.
A Regular Gathering in the Heart of Cullinan
Now, every second Saturday of the month, the lawn at Cullinan Junction transforms into a hub of green-thumbed joy. Tables overflow with potted herbs, heirloom seeds, succulents, cuttings, and seasonal veggies. Members of the community gather to swap plants and seeds—for free—and connect with fellow garden lovers.
There’s no money involved. Instead, there’s a spirit of generosity and a belief in sustainable living that guides the exchange. People come with extra seedlings and leave with something new to grow—and often, new friends to grow alongside.
More Than a Swap—A Movement
The Cullinan Plant and Seed Swap has become more than a place to trade plants. It’s a celebration of biodiversity, community spirit, and local resilience. It encourages people to grow their own food, learn about indigenous and heirloom plants, and foster sustainable gardening practices.
“It’s not just about plants,” says Jennifer. “It’s about people helping each other, building something together. You learn something new every time you come.”
Everyone’s Welcome
Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just starting your first pot of basil, the swap welcomes everyone. No fancy setups needed—just bring what you have, take what you need, and enjoy the connections that bloom naturally.
