Ingredients

Loaf Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1/4 cup fresh orange juice

Zest of 1 orange

1/4 cup plain yogurt or sour cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the orange glaze (optional):

1 cup powdered sugar

2-3 tablespoons fresh orange juice

Zest of 1 orange

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

  4. Add the eggs to the butter-sugar mixture, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

  5. Stir in the fresh orange juice, orange zest, plain yogurt or sour cream, and vanilla extract until well combined.

  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can result in a dense loaf.

  7. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.

  8. Bake the orange loaf in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

  9. While the loaf is baking, prepare the orange glaze (if using) by whisking together the powdered sugar, fresh orange juice, and orange zest until smooth. Adjust the consistency by adding more powdered sugar or orange juice as needed.

  10. Once baked, remove the orange loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack set over a baking sheet to cool completely.

  11. If using the orange glaze, drizzle it over the cooled loaf. Allow the glaze to set before slicing and serving.

Slice the orange loaf and enjoy it with a cup of tea or coffee for a delightful citrusy treat. The combination of fresh orange flavor and moist, tender texture makes this loaf perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a sweet snack any time of day!
