How to Crochet a Single Crochet Stitch

Updated: Mar 10

Single Crochet Stitch

Crocheting a single crochet (sc) is one of the most fundamental stitches in crochet. It's versatile, easy to learn, and commonly used in many patterns. Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide:

Materials Needed

  1. Yarn of your choice

  2. Crochet hook (check your yarn label for recommended size)

  3. Scissors

  4. Yarn needle (optional, for weaving in ends)

Step-by-Step Instructions to Crochet a Single Crochet Stitch:

1. Start with a Slip Knot

  • Start with a slip knot by making a loop with your yarn, passing the tail behind the loop, and pulling it through.

  • Tighten the loop slightly around your hook.

2. Make a Foundation Chain

  • Yarn over (wrap the yarn over the hook) and pull through the loop on your hook.

  • Repeat this process until you’ve made the number of chains needed for your project.

3. Insert the Hook into the Chain

  • Skip the first chain from your hook (unless the pattern says otherwise).

  • Insert the hook into the second chain. Make sure to go under the top loop or, for a more secure edge, under both the top loop and the back bump.

4. Yarn Over

  • Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front.

5. Pull Through the Chain

  • Pull the yarn through the chain. You now have two loops on your hook.

6. Yarn Over Again

  • Wrap the yarn over your hook once more.

7. Complete the Stitch

  • Pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.

  • Congratulations! You’ve made a single crochet.

  • Insert your hook into the next chain, yarn over, pull through the chain (two loops on hook), yarn over again, and pull through both loops.

  • Repeat this process for each chain in the row.

9. Turn Your Work

  • At the end of the row, chain one (this is called the turning chain).

  • Turn your work so you’re ready to crochet into the stitches from the previous row.

10. Crochet in Subsequent Rows

  • Insert your hook into the first stitch of the row (under both loops at the top of the stitch).

  • Yarn over, pull through, yarn over again, and pull through both loops.

  • Repeat for each stitch across the row.

Tips for Success:

  • Tension: Keep an even tension to ensure uniform stitches. If your stitches are too tight, it will be hard to insert the hook; if too loose, the fabric may look messy.

  • Practice: Spend time practicing on a sample swatch before starting a larger project.

  • Stitch Count: Count your stitches at the end of each row to ensure consistency.

With these steps, you’re ready to master single crochet! Do you have a specific project in mind for this stitch?
