Ingredients

1/4 cup olive oil (extra virgin for a robust flavor)

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (or your preferred vinegar)

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

1 clove garlic, minced (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

Whisk Together:

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, Dijon mustard, minced garlic (if using), salt, and pepper. Whisk until well combined and emulsified.

Adjust Seasoning:

  • Taste the dressing and adjust the salt, pepper, or vinegar to suit your preferences. You can also add a touch of honey or maple syrup for sweetness if desired.

Store:

  • Transfer the dressing to a jar or container with a tight-fitting lid.

Shake Before Use:

  • Before using the dressing, give it a good shake to re-emulsify the ingredients.

Serve:

  • Drizzle the dressing over your favorite salad greens or vegetables just before serving. Toss to coat evenly.

Variations and Tips:

  • Herb Infused Dressing: Add chopped fresh herbs like basil, parsley, or thyme for a burst of flavor.

  • Creamy Dressing: For a creamy version, add a tablespoon of Greek yogurt or mayonnaise to the basic dressing recipe.

  • Citrus Twist: Substitute some of the vinegar with freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice for a citrusy kick.

  • Spice it Up: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of hot sauce for a spicy dressing.

  • Sweet and Tangy: Mix in a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup along with a squeeze of lemon juice for a sweet and tangy dressing.

Feel free to customize this basic recipe to suit your taste preferences or the type of salad you're making. Homemade dressings are a great way to elevate the flavor of your salads while avoiding preservatives and additives found in store-bought options. Enjoy your freshly made salad dressing!
