Ingredients
1 pound (450g) of beef (you can use ground beef or thinly sliced beef)
1 onion, finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup (240ml) beef broth
1/2 cup (120ml) red wine (optional)
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)
Preparation
Prepare the Beef:
If you're using ground beef, brown it in a large skillet over medium heat. Break it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Once browned, remove it from the skillet and set it aside.
If you're using thinly sliced beef, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in the skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef slices and cook until browned on both sides. Remove the beef from the skillet and set it aside.
Make the Sauce:
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Sauté the chopped onion until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Combine Ingredients:
If you're using flour for thickening, sprinkle it over the onion and garlic mixture in the skillet. Stir and cook for about 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the beef broth and red wine (if using), stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
Add the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine all the ingredients.
Simmer and Thicken:
Bring the sauce to a simmer. If it's too thin, you can let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes to reduce and thicken slightly.
If you want a thicker sauce, you can make a slurry by mixing 1-2 tablespoons of flour with a little water until smooth. Gradually stir the slurry into the simmering sauce until you reach your desired thickness.
Add Beef Back In:
Once the sauce has thickened to your liking, add the cooked beef back into the skillet. Stir to coat the beef with the sauce.
Let the beef simmer in the sauce for a few more minutes to absorb the flavors.
Serve:
Your beef sauce is ready! Serve it over cooked pasta, rice, mashed potatoes, or alongside vegetables. Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley if desired.
