Heerlijk Nastergal
What is Natergal or Umsobo?
Nastergal preserve is crafted with Solanum retroflexum berries known as Nastergal or Umsobo (isiZulu) in South Africa.
Heerlijk plants its berries from heirloom seed at the foothills of the Drakensberg at Oliviershoek Pass in the Berville district of KZN.
Nastergal is planted and harvested by hand. It takes approximately 900 handpicked berries to fill one single jar. The sun-ripened berries are cooked in small batches according to a traditional family recipe. All the way until labelling, Heerlijk's Nastergal is produced entirely by hand. Patience and care reflect the passion of the producer and makes it truly artisanal.
